Dr. Mohammad Jamal MBChB

Dr.Jamal is an Associate Professor of Surgery at Kuwait University and a consultant Metabolic, upper GI and HPB Surgeon.
He graduated with first class honors from Aberdeen University where he was the top student in his class. He underwent his surgical residency at McGill University and obtained a fellowship in Hepatobiliary and transplant surgery. He then Underwent a second fellowship in Advanced laparoscopy, robotics and Bariatric surgery at the Cleveland Clinic main campus in Ohio Cleveland. Currently he is performing hepatobiliary and bariatric Surgery (surgery for weight loss).

Dr. Jamal authored in more than 80 papers published in peer reviewed journals. He also authored many book chapters including a book chapter in the most read bariatric surgery book by Schauer et al.

He won many prizes including best resident teacher award for undergraduate education where he was voted by McGill University students for this award. His research in pancreatic surgery won him the best research award at the Canadian surgical association meeting in 2011. He was also chosen to be among top 5 abstracts at the international hepatobiliary association meeting in Buenos Iris in 2010. His studies on the field of weight loss and minimally invasive techniques for weight loss are very remarkable in terms of originality and ideas with more than 2000 citations in 2022.

Dr.Jamal performed along with his colleague Dr.Husain Almahmeed Kuwait first liver transplant surgery. He also performed the first laparoscopic Whipple surgery in Kuwait in 2018 which was one of the firsts in the region. He also performed some of the first Bariatric robotic cases in Kuwait. He also performed along with his colleague Dr.Haytham AlKhayyat the first SADI procedure in Kuwait in 2015. Following the performance of the first ever liver transplant in Kuwait he was awarded the pioneer in clinical care award by the Kuwait Surgical Association. He also introduced the enhanced recovery protocols in Bariatric surgery to Kuwait.

Dr.Jamal is active in the field of undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. He obtained a Masters in Medical Education from the University of Cincinnatti in 2009. He was a member in the McGill General Surgery Training Committee. He was also the only resident member in the Royal College of surgeons of Canada white paper group that lead the reformation in postgraduate medical education in 2010. He was the founding program director for the surgical foundation program in Kuwait and made it along with his team the first surgical program outside Canada to gain the full accreditation by the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada. He is also the founding program director for the Bariatric surgery fellowship in Kuwait and is currently occupying that rule.
